I wanted to focus on the SAT scores, specifically the Math scores. I have seen and heard a lot of commercials lately mentioning the decline in math skills for American students. I am one of them. I did not include a north arrow, or scale because I did not feel it was needed for this data. I wanted to keep it very basic because of the wide variety of people who read newspapers.

I decided to include two possible locations in New York. I chose NY because of the huge power drain generated by the city. My first choice is Lyme, NY. It is on the mainland and has good road networks and lines exist to handle the voltage generated. My second choice was on Stony Island. This would require new lines to be built and higher cost for maintenance (by boat or helicopter). The majority of locations that had Excellent raitings for wind power were over open water. My only concern with these locations would be the winter weather. Uprades in technology could help with this problem. An example would be the same device that aircraft use to prevent icing on the wings during flight. Both of these locations would require the owner of the land's permission. The petroleum company could use this as an opportunity to show that they truly are looking to help with the Green Earth push.

Wine Map

The task was to create a proportional map of wine consumption. I think I have the correct numbers in play. Had some issues setting my defaults for opacity and color, but worked it out in the end. Still fumbling around with this illustrator, but it's getting easier.

Lab Exercise Week 5

My intent was to use a callout for the chlorepleth map. I had to draw the lines to get close to the effect that I wanted. Personally I would have removed the United States inset map entirely. The text for this week refered to not needing map clutter. If someone is viewing this map they would have an understanding of where Florida is in the US. My major problem was trying to change the numbers in the legend. I could remove the zeroes on the first entry, but couldn't figure out how to change any of the others.

Florida Keys...Second attempt

Second Attempt. I still can't get the zoom correct. I couldn't find the crop tool under objects, so I used the save to web device and tried to resize. Very blurry.

Florida Key exercise

I know I have just started using this program, but it isn't for me. I feel that I can do more with Arcmap. This seems to be a "pretty function" that I don't need. The maps I create are used for analysis, not for magazine covers. I'll stick with it, but man is this illustrator frustrating.
